There was a double reason now. He not only broke the Sabbath according to their interpretation, but he said something which they understood to be a clear claim to divinity. By making God his Father and claiming to be the Son of God in a unique sense, he made himself equal with God. He did not claim something less than deity for himself as if the Father could be God and the Son less than God. He made himself equal with the Father: this was their conclusion and Christ made no attempt to correct them, for they had understood him rightly.
