It would be too sophisticated to explain how Father, Son and Spirit are quite different in a way, and yet absolutely the same in all essentials and think the same. So he puts simply, ‘The Father loveth the Son’ – there is a bond of love – ‘and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works’, even the raising of the dead, he goes on to say.They will see far greater things. They will see the raising of the dead. They may resist the miracle of seeing this paralysed, withered man – in this condition for so many years – raised up to health and strength; will they go on resisting? Because there are even more amazing things to come. They won’t marvel, most of them, in the sense that they admire him, they’ll marvel only in the more limited sense of being unable to account for things, but they will continue to oppose him, and to persecute him.
