John 5:29
Comments
This is the resurrection of life. It is the resurrection of the living. Those who have been brought to life by spiritual resurrection, in other words through their conversion during their life on earth, shall know the resurrection of the living or the resurrection of life. Because their hearts were changed, they live to please God and to do his will, and to strive to follow his commandments to live for him. ‘And they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation’ – the bodily resurrection of those who are still dead spiritually and for whom it is too late to seek the Lord. This is the resurrection of condemnation and death. They are to be sent body and soul into everlasting damnation and therefore are raised with their unglorified bodies.
Application
Questions
What is the basis of salvation taught in this verse? If you read it in isolation from all that has gone before, it could mislead you. You could look at it and say, this sounds very much to me like salvation by works. But it is quite obvious that that is not what is meant because of the verses that precede it. Verse 25 says, ‘The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear [and understand and believe] shall live.’ They have true faith in their hearts, a lively faith that shows itself by the good works it produces. They will be the ones who experience the resurrection of life.
