Whatever does he mean? He means that if he bears witness to himself, his witness would not be true in their estimation because it is not verified; it is not corroborated; there is no external witness to confirm it. He does not mean that if he bears witness of himself he is speaking untruly. He cannot mean that for in John 8 he says plainly, ‘Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go’ (John 8:14).
