The Lord builds this up so that he keeps their attention and they hang on his word. ‘There is another that beareth witness of me.’ He does not yet say who. So they are waiting – who is this? ‘And I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.’ But the witness is not yet named. In fact, somebody who is not the witness he is going to refer to is named in the build-up. But this witness that Christ speaks of is true, only ever speaks the truth, and gives a witness that incontrovertible.
