The message of the word was not in them, in their souls. That is the proof. It would be impossible for them not to realise that Christ was God, the Messiah, if they had understood the Old Testament, if they had seen all the types and the shadows and the promises of Christ and the prophecies. If they had put them together and they believed them, they would have immediately known him and recognised him. But the proof that they had not understood a thing was here – they did not receive the Son, they did not know him when he came. It is so important for us to see just how much Christ said to them in a very early stage of his ministry – establishing his Sonship. He says to them, ‘You scribes, you expert interpreters of the Old Testament, you chief priests, you experts in these things – you know nothing, because if you won’t see the greatest thing in the Old Testament – the prophesies of the Son, the types and the shadows; and if you don’t see him, you can’t understand anything else.’
Application
The same is true today. If you don’t love the Son, and see the Son of God, and depend upon him, you cannot understand the Bible. These theological liberals - well, they scarcely even believe the Bible as inspired - but what can they understand about the Bible? They can pick up their higher degrees, they can become professors of faculties of divinity in various universities that do not believe and honour the Son, but they can’t fit it together because, Christ, the Son, links everything in the Bible, and they reject him. Tragically it is the same with some people who think they are Christians, but they have never come to Christ. This Book is just a muddle to them. They’ll never understand it.
