He had lived a perfect life before them, had only taught what was consistent with God’s word, had done amazing miracles in their sight, and had been the object of the testimony of John, but they still would not receive him. Yet so fickle are they that if another were to come in his own name without the testimony of God, they would receive him. They are incapable of making a proper judgment. Who that other would be, Christ does not say, but he warns, ‘For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect (Matthew 24:24).’
