John 6:22 Commentary and Bible Study

We see now a discourse in which Christ reasons with cynics, people who are cynical about his identity as Messiah, people who are cynical about spiritual blessing from on high, and only look for an earthly deliverance and salvation. It is a very remarkable discourse. Christ aims principally at presenting his divinity, and the nature of salvation as a gift of grace, and explaining to the people the reason behind their great reluctance to follow him.This is the day after the feeding of the five thousand, and the people are now standing on the east side of the Sea of Galilee, near Bethsaida Julias. They had not seen Christ leave, and yet they note that the disciples have gone off without him in the same boat in which they had come. The people looked for him. They went down to the water’s edge. They saw his disciples depart and not him. Where is he? What has happened to him?
