The work of God, answers Christ, is to believe that Messiah has come, and that he will make it possible for God to forgive them. Trust in him, believe in him. They did not like that. ‘Are you saying, We cannot do it for ourselves? Are you saying we are not up to it? You are not giving us anything to do. We want to accomplish our own salvation. We want to stand before God with something we can be proud of. We have earned our way here, we have achieved this. You have not given us anything to do. And you have not given us any rewards on earth, which is what they mainly wanted. You have not given us things here. How do we know that you are true? How do you know that this can possibly be right, that there is nothing for us to do except grovel and ask for a free salvation and repent of our sin? And we are going to get no special place on earth, no special priority or superiority or treatment.’ So they did not like salvation by grace, salvation which gives you spiritual blessings, not mere earthly blessings.
