Those who are given by the Father to the Son can be certain that Christ will never turn them away no matter what they have done, no matter how far they have gone down the path of sin, no matter how obnoxious they have made themselves to the Son of God, for his will is totally submitted to the Father’s will. Any personal consideration that we might wrongly imagine could cause him to reject us because of our sin is set aside. So fully submitted is he to the Father that he can say that he did not come to do his own will but the will of the Father. This of course does not mean that Christ came reluctantly or that he did what he did not want to do; it is simply his way of reassuring repenting sinners that nothing they have done will cause them to be refused. Because he takes no consideration of his own sufferings or of the labour involved in saving each of the elect, he can say that he does not do his own will but the Father’s will with which he has perfectly aligned his own will.
