So Christ teaches them the necessity of the ingesting of life. It is a metaphor for believing. It explains believing. It puts all the earnestness and deep sincerity into believing. ‘I am that bread of life’, which the giving of the manna in the wilderness prefigured, prophesied. The giving of the manna literally happened; it fed them for nearly 40 years, but then they died because in reality it was a only temporary provision which was a figure or prophecy of something more glorious. I am the fulfilment, says the Lord. I am that bread of life.
