Here is the difference. ‘This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.’ Eat of me, believe in me, ingest me, take me into your life and believe in me with all your being and depend upon me, and you will receive life in the soul. The bread which Moses gave never achieved this. This is the bread of God which has truly come down from heaven as a result of the incarnation.
Application
Everything that God taught the people in types and shadows pointed to Christ. All those respects in which the types fell short, are fully provided in the reality, which is Christ. God has no better gift to give us than Christ, and therefore all that we need must be provided in him. The manna left the people still in a mortal state and without spiritual life. The true bread from heaven cannot leave us in this state but must address our greatest problems. It first gives us spiritual life, and then at the resurrection it raises our bodies from the grave and transforms them into the likeness of Christ’s glorified body.
