Jesus insists on the truth of what he has just said. He does not make his language any easier for them, but uses the same riddle with even more force: They must eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood or they have no life in them. Whoever eats his flesh and drinks his blood has eternal life and nothing can prevent Christ raising him up at the resurrection. His flesh is true food and his blood is true drink, while the manna was only a picture. By eating and drinking, we dwell in him and he dwells in us. Christ had already told the Jews what he meant by this language; he had told them that that he was talking about faith in verses 35, 40, and 47. The Son of God took human nature in order to pay the price for lost sinners by laying down his life as a sacrifice for sin, and suffering the punishment of hell for all given to him by the Father. We receive the benefit by eating his flesh, in other words, not by any literal act of eating, but by trusting personally in his sacrificial death for us.
Application
It is a wonderful consolation to the Christian that from the time he first believes in Christ he is secure forever; nothing can prevents Christ raising him up from the grave and giving him a new glorified body. All that lies in the intervening time between the first true act of faith and the resurrection at the last day can do nothing to dislodge him from the love and care of Christ who watches over every step of the believer’s life. And the reason we cannot be lost is that our first act of believing gives us spiritual life which God will never take back again.
