Christ is saying something like this, ‘What? How will you feel when it is the end of your life? Will that make you feel dreadful, because you reject me? Then, you’ll hear about my resurrection and ascension, and you will be crushed, and in despair. It was all true,’ you’ll say, ‘and I spurned it, and I rejected it.’ Well, you see many Jewish people in Jerusalem did feel like that, on the day of Pentecost, when the Spirit came down and the great preaching of the Christian church, in a sense, really began, and they were pricked – pierced – through in their hearts. When heaven vindicates him by receiving him back where he was before, then they will have no justification for refusing to believe he came down from heaven. This does not mean that they would all personally see the ascension. Christ’s ascension was indeed witnessed by mortal men as he was received up into glory, but even those who did not see it would have to admit the ascension had taken place: some when the Spirit worked to convict them of failing to believe on him, but eventually all when he comes from heaven to judge the world.
