It is important that those who follow the Lord temporarily and who then fall away do not imagine that they have truly understood the glory of Christ and found him lacking in some way. The Lord therefore makes clear that the reason they are about to fall away is that they have never truly come to him. Do they think that it is within their power to choose him or reject him? Do they think they have seen something in him which is deficient that makes them wisely turn away from one who utters such hard-to-take sayings? No, what is really going on is that they have not been given by the Father to the Son, and the Spirit has not worked in their hearts, and therefore their choices have been dominated by the flesh: by selfish considerations, by man-centred advantages, and by hunger for the praise that comes from men.
