How does John’s order of events relate to the other Gospels? Between verse seven and verse eight is a whole history which we read in the other Gospels. I think this is the order probably. In verse seven Philip is asked and he gives his reply. Then before verse eight a number of things seem to take place. There has been the conversation with Philip, and it is in the mind of the disciples that Philip said you could not feed these people with two hundred days’ pay. After the long day of preaching, his disciples come to him again with this same problem. At this point, Jesus sends them to see how many loaves they have. When they find out, it is Andrew speaking for all who says, ‘Five, and two fishes.’ Only John’s Gospel names Philip and Andrew and mentions a lad.
