John 7:31
Comments
There are some who come to believe in him. Some of them were thinking, some of them reasoned it out for themselves, some of them did not listen to the propaganda from the leaders. How was that? The Holy Spirit is at work, opening up minds, showing people what Christ had come for, but they are a minority. The vast majority are going to scream for his execution in just six months’ time. What a picture we have in the first part of this chapter of the different classes, the different groups of people who rejected Christ no matter what evidence or authenticating signs were witnessed by them.
Application
It is the same with modern society, the same with us perhaps? It is a work of the Spirit. May he work in every heart, delivering you from captivity to prevailing atheism and unbelief! If he has, give him all the glory; praise him and thank him.
Questions
Is this true faith that John speaks of here? Sometimes in the Gospel of John the word faith is used to describe something less than real faith: faith in Christ as a miracle worker, or faith in a political deliverer bringing prosperity to the nation. Nevertheless it is possible that the quality of faith is increasing, and certainly there are no miracles spoken of at this feast.
