Again the Lord Jesus does not try to put them right or instruct them on this matter. The real obstacle to faith in these people was much deeper than this. When we are dealing with objections we have to do so with wisdom. So often, as soon as we answer one objection, the next one is fired at us, because the objector does not really want answers. What they want is to defend their unbelief and to provide a fig leaf of an excuse to cover their wilful refusal to seek the Lord on his terms. For Christ to have answered these questions promptly, earnestly, would have been to taken in by their implied claim that these were the real reason for not believing in him, when in truth it was due to their rebellious refusal to submit to God.
