Why did it hate him when he did miracles, he healed thousands? Because alongside the miracles he was constantly preaching the need for repentance towards God and forgiveness and new life, for personal conversion and reconciliation with the living God, and they hated him for that. The proud chief priests, scribes and Pharisees said, ‘What is this man implying? What is he saying about us? That we need repentance and forgiveness, and new life and a relationship with God? Scandalous, insulting that he should say such things.’ And many of the ordinary people felt the same way. They did not want a life with God. They thought they were accepted by God already. They were deeply religious people. They kept the details of the ancient ceremonial law that God had given them, and they hated Christ for his message.
