They are saying this again for the benefit of the crowd. They are all the time trying to reduce his language to mere earthly language. They are trying to convince the crowd that this is just an earthly statement.You notice they don’t take, pay much attention to what he said about them – they won’t hear it. He has said, ‘Whither I go, ye cannot come.’ That just seems to go over their heads. There is no question in their minds that they will ever be lost – ‘Are we not Jews?’ – that’s their great mistake – ‘Are not all Jews certain of a heavenly future?’ They assess his words in terms of Christ going away from them, not them going away from him. What do they care that they will not be able to come where he is? In their estimation he is of no consequence at all. What matters is where they are, and what is more interesting to them is where he is going to go so as no longer to be with them – perhaps to commit suicide.
