John 8:23
Comments
Every time they confuse his meaning his reply only makes it clearer to the crowd that he is divine. So they only end up help him by their heckling to make his point even clearer. He makes it plain to them that there is a great gulf – it is a matter of them being below, and God being above, and there is a great gulf between all men – Jews and Gentiles – and the living God. This reminds us of chapter, 3, and verse 3, where Christ says to Nicodemus, ‘You must be born again’ – or literally in the Greek, ‘You must be born from above.’ This is not new, this picture of the Lord’s, of being above, or below; of heaven, of the people of God, or of the devil, or of this fleshly world.
Application
This is a challenge to all of us. Where do you stand? Are you above, or below? Are you of God – because you’ve sought him and found him – and there is your heavenly home, and he is your Father, and Christ is your Saviour, and the Holy Spirit is the One who will keep you close to Him? Are you from above, as it were, born from above? Of are you from below, altogether of this world, altogether for yourself, and fleshly, and the things of this world? And the Lord begins to teach them these concepts once again.
