Now you can see straight away that he was, with his divine insight, not convinced at all that there was any depth – ‘If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed’ – and as the narrative goes on, they didn’t. So here is one difference between superficial faith and belief – assent, recognition only – and saving faith, which really transforms the soul.
So what kind of a believer are you? Are you a superficial believer, or are you really governed by your faith, and by the word of God, and do you know the Saviour, and do you cling to Him? That’s really what is in this precious word. ‘If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples’ – my followers – ‘indeed’ – truly – ‘then, truly, you are my followers.’ You see, He knows that they are not truly His, they are not full believers. He is having to warn them, and caution them, and stir them to something deeper.
