Verse 32 speaks of something in the future – ‘And ye shall know the true, and the truth shall make you free.’ You are not saved yet, he says to them.
But the truth – you believe in Christ, and his suffering and death on Calvary, and his substitutionary atonement for sinners. If you believe in these things, and come to Him, and seek Him, and find Him, then you are free from the condemnation of sin, the sentence of eternal death. And you are free from the inevitable practise of sin, because your life is changed, and you can fight against it, and you can resist it. You are still a sinner, but oh the difference that salvation makes - you are free from the absolute inevitable mastery and dominion of sin. So, the truth shall make you free.
