A servant does not abide in the house - any house – for ever. Of course he doesn’t, the bond slave, he’s not a member of the family; he won’t inherit the house; he doesn’t belong in this world, he’ll be taken away by death. ‘But the Son’ – Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God – ‘abideth ever.’ He is the heir. So, it follows, verse 36, ‘If the Son therefore shall make you free’ – from your bondage to sin, and to condemnation – ‘ye shall be free indeed.’ These are great words. The status of unconverted Israelites was only that of slaves in the house. Although they claimed to belong to the household of Abraham, as long as they lacked faith and had never experienced the new birth, they had only a temporary place in the house which was closer to that of servants than to that of sons. Only by exercising the faith which Abraham exercised would they become fully fledged sons. This could only happen as a result of the Son of God setting them free from their slavery to sin so that they could be adopted into the household of God.
