I know, he says to them, that ye are Abraham’s seed – physically that is – but he is going to show them they are not Abraham’s seed spiritually; they have no spiritual likeness to Abraham, no family likeness, they don’t behave like Abraham in any way. ‘I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.’ And they are very profound words. ‘My word,’ the things I am saying to you, about your spiritual need, my word has no room in you, no place in you. That’s the idea. And that is true of us. If you come to church, and hear the word of God, and hear the gospel, and it makes no impression on you, it’s because this word has no room in you. Why does it have no room in you? Because something else is filling you up. Something else is occupying all the space in your mind, and in your heart. Are you excited about the things of this world, all the things you can do, all the things you can possess? You are excited about number one, and your sins even, the things you love that are not right. You’re excited about pride, and notice, and being thought well of. It is all to do with you, and your mind is just crammed full of self, and this world. There’s no room for even the appeal of Christ at its most tender, even the message of mercy, no room for the warnings that without him we’ll die.
