It is the same with us – do we have superficial belief, or saving faith? The answer is here. Do you love God? Do you love Him, or is he just a distant God to you? ‘I think I’m a Christian, I believe in Him, I believe in Christ.’ But you don’t love him. It doesn’t turn you over if you sin against him. It doesn’t split your conscience and hurt you. Tomorrow you don’t say, ‘I want to do his will and live as a Christian man, or a Christian woman.’ When you want a new job, or a new house, a new anything, you don’t say to yourself: ‘I want whatever God wants, I’ll pray to Him, I’ll seek his direction, I’ll honour Him. I won’t do it for self-aggrandisement, just so that I look big and special.’ Do you love Him? Does the love of God determine everything for you? That’s how you know, if you exercise real belief or simply superficial recognition that doesn’t change your life. And the Lord is working through these signs, as he speaks to the Jews, in spite of all their distractions. But they just would not listen. It was a matter of the will.
