Then he gives the explanation: there has never been a work of God in their lives, to open their eyes and convict them of their need of truth. ‘He that is of God heareth God’s words’, and understands them. ‘Ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.’ Well, that was unanswerable. So how did the clergy of the time respond? They cannot give a reasonable answer. This is why they do not believe him in spite of what he says and in spite of the perfection of his conduct and work. Instead, they can only insult him.
