In the midst of this warning comes nevertheless an offer of mercy, a kind statement from Christ. And to draw attention to it he uses the double amen. ‘Verily, verily’, amen and amen, I most solemnly assure you. ‘Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.’ How precious are those words. How do we keep the saying of Christ? It means we obey his saying. We obey his message. What is his message? It is about repentance and the remission of sins. If we repent, our sin will be taken away. If we repent and we trust in him and his work and what he will do, he will suffer and die on Calvary to make an atonement. And we yield our lives to him and trust only in him and not in ourselves, well then ‘he shall never see death.’ We will die physically, but yet we will not die, we will go immediately into the presence of God. ‘If a man’ – an individual man; individuals must hear and respond – ‘keep my saying [obey me] he shall never see death.’
