The assumption behind their words is that anyone who is able to give immortality to another must have it himself, for if he had the power to deliver others from death he would certainly use that power to prevent himself dying; in this they are correct. But they then show how little they have understood by making a foolish comparison with Abraham and the prophets. Of course the Messiah is greater than either of these for Abraham and all the prophets spoke of Christ and looked forward to his day, and trusted in him as the one who would redeem them from their sins.
