Here is this final ‘Verily, verily’ which is remarkable. When the Jews said to him, you are not fifty years old, you were not around when Abraham was alive. What do you mean? He could see you and your day? ‘Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.’ ‘I am’ – that is the name of God in the Old Testament. ‘Before Abraham was, I am.’ I was with the Father. I pre-existed Abraham. I am eternally the Son of God.But also read it this way: even in the Scripture, ‘before Abraham was, I am.’ Christ appears in the Scripture long before Abraham. In the very beginning, in Genesis 3.15 the first promise of a Saviour. Before Abraham we see Christ in the Scripture. It applies literally, it applies scripturally. Before Abraham was, I am there. Once God enables you to understand that, you can grasp everything.
