His reply is very brief, very calm, but it’s cutting, it’s electrifying. If this was not inspired Scripture, and we were viewing this just as a piece of literature, we would still say this reply is brilliant! You cannot really fault it in anyway.
Behold our Saviour: we not only observe his calm, but we observe his unassailable wisdom, his immeasurable wisdom. ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.’ Of course, the stones would have been cast, if it had ever happened and it had fallen into disuse, outside the Temple, in a designated place. They would have stretched forward the hand and said, I will cast the stone.
