So, again, they call the man that was blind, and they suggest a strategy to him. ‘Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.’ So the Pharisees actually put to him this possibility. ‘Look, we will not proceed against you if you leave Jesus out of it. Stop saying he healed you. You are mistaken on that point – just accept it. You may have had some kind of an encounter, but just stop attributing this to him. Just praise God that now you can see, and you were blind. And as long as you undertake to leave him out of it, you can go free.’ That seems to be what they are saying to him: ‘Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.’ Now they are just trying to bully him. If you want to stay in the synagogue. If you want to stay a worshipper, praise God and disown this man. ‘We know that this man is a sinner.’ They are pressing and pressing; it’s classic interrogation – ‘What did he to thee? How opened he thine eyes?
