But he will not have it. The blind man is very firm. He doesn’t take advantage of it. He’s so full of gratitude and he’s certain that Jesus is from God, even if he doesn’t understand he’s the Messiah. ‘He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.’ ‘One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.’ And I am not going to take that away from him. They keep repeating their question but with absolutely no intention of following the evidence or wanting to truly understand, and the blind man is well aware of this. He knows they are unbelieving cynics and he has been given the ability to see through the charade of their outward religious exterior and to see them for what they are. He no longer fears what they will do to him, for he sees that their approval and their religion is worth nothing anyway. The man answers brilliantly. You see, he is more of a priest than they. He is more a servant of God than they are. The chief priests, the scribes, the Pharisees, though only the Pharisees are named. ‘I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? Then they reviled him.’ Are you going to change your mind, are you also wanting to be his disciples?’ Of course not. He is using a little sarcasm. ‘What are you repeatedly asking me this for? I’m not going to change. I’m not going to change my story.’
