And look at how they insult Christ. ‘We know that God spoke unto Moses: as for this fellow [the word ‘fellow’ is added by translators], we know not from whence he is.’ By which they mean, we do not know where he is prophesised in the Scripture. They hated Christ because he had preached about the necessity of repentance; they hated him because he taught that by no means all Jews would go to heaven; they hated him because he said that ceremonial would not save them, only repentance and faith; they hated him because he had cleansed the Temple and rebuked their merchandising; they hated him because he warned the people against their hypocrisy; they hated him because he had told one of the leading Pharisees that he was not a true child of God and he needed to be born again, implying that so did all the others. So they had contempt for Christ.
