These proud men cannot bear to be corrected by such a man, and their anger at being spoken to like this makes them respond by excommunicating him. The fact that what he says makes perfect sense and cannot be refuted just makes them more angry. To justify their anger they try to disqualify him by pointing to his being born blind, and they reveal their prejudice by blaming his blindness on his sin – something that Christ had already said was not the cause.
Application
So it is with all those who occupy a position of honour in the name of God which they do not deserve. They have spent so many years thinking of themselves as the great ones that when someone comes and punctures their pomposity and shows how wrong they are about God, they cannot bear it, and they react with unjustified anger.
