The Lord knew exactly where he would be. He was the Son of God, he could see him in his mind’s eye wherever he was. He asks him this question – ‘Dost thou believe on the Son of God?’ It was not going to be enough for the man to say, I believe in Jesus, that he is a prophet, because he has given me my sight. This is the most wonderful thing that ever happened. But the blind receiving sight is not conversion. It is a wonderful blessing, but it is only a picture of conversion. It had to be more than that. Christ asks him a more searching question. ‘Dost thou believe on the Son of God?’ Do you believe that Christ Jesus is the eternal Son of God, equal with the Father, who came to purchase salvation for sinners? The man must be brought to trust in Christ as his Lord and Saviour. Do you believe in him as God? If you believe in him as God, you will obey him. You will do his bidding.
