The neighbours asked about him: ‘Is not this he that sat and begged?’ Some said, yes it is. Others said, I am not so sure. He is like him, yes. But the change amazed them. It was not just the sight of him, it was his manner – striding more confidently around, looking with wonder at everything, smiling at people with a warmth. His personality had come to life. His humanity had come to life. Everything was there. And he said, Yes, I am he. I am the man. So the great question in their minds as you can imagine – ‘How were thine eyes opened?’ How did it happen? Tell us. And he told them about Jesus.Well, he is very clear in his statement. I am sure the Gospel record represents him. He is a man who speaks just the right number of words, says everything absolutely and simply and plainly. And he tells them what happened to him. And they said, ‘Where is he?’ They knew the name of Jesus, even if this formerly blind man did not know very well. They knew this spelt trouble. Anybody who supported him or believed in him would be excommunicated and they felt they had a responsibility to report this man to the Pharisees, to the Jewish leaders.
Application
This so often happens with conversion too. Somebody is converted and the family is astonished. If you are young when you are converted, the adults usually say, ‘This is strange, we can’t account for this, but it will pass – it must pass.’ They can’t understand that your nature has been changed, your whole deportment, your way of behaving. If you are a young fellow your sister will say, ‘This brother of mine was a menace. What’s happened to him? He’s changed.’ But you must keep it that way, because you know home is the place where you are most relaxed, you are used to being switched off. That is therefore the place where the devil will tempt you back into sin and losing your temper, and all kinds of things, more than any other place.
