Gabriel enters the house and speaks the very words that God has commanded him to speak. As Hendriksen comments, his entrance and his words seem designed to create an atmosphere of tranquillity.
It is hard for those who habitually think of themselves in a lowly way to immediately accept some great honour or compliment about themselves, however true it may be. Little children cannot see themselves as great, and cannot easily imagine ‘that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven’ (Matthew 18:10). The humble mind resists such things. How different is the proud mind which is constantly soaking up every hint of praise and flattery, whether it is justified or not.
