How very practical is Mary’s question. She will remember all that has been said, but right now her mind is focused on the fact of her virginity. From this question we see what she understood of the angel Gabriel’s words. She did not see this as something that would follow her marriage to Joseph in the ordinary way. She has received this special visitation, and this personal revelation on this subject been given to her. It is clearly about what will take place immediately, in her present unmarried state. But how can that be?Mary is not guilty of the same unbelief that Zacharias was guilty of. Her question was justified, given that this was something that was unknown in the entire history of mankind. Never before has God worked in this way, and for him to bypass the normal means is something that requires explanation. But Mary is ready to believe, the moment she is told, without further questioning. She had a believing and submissive mind, and not one that would go on doubting when a clear answer from God had been given her.
Application
Our minds must be satisfied with the answers given us in Scripture. It is a sign of unbelief to go on enquiring endlessly and never to rest our minds on God’s explanation. Some will do so, and refuse to exercise faith. They want everything to be reduced to the level that they can understand. This is the failing of those who demand scientific proof for everything, as if that was a higher basis for certainty that the word of God.
