(Synoptics: Luke 1:39-45)The angel Gabriel has spoken of Elisabeth being with child, and Mary must see this with her own eyes because she somehow understands this is connected with her own promised child. Nothing has been said about this as far as we know, but here is something which only God could do, and it will strengthen her faith to see her relative blessed so remarkably.
How wonderfully God is working to bring all these things together. Nothing is left out. A babe within her relative’s womb becomes a prophet to confirm to her that she carries the Christ child. This would strengthen her to bear the suspicion of Joseph and others in Nazareth. God gives us all necessary consolation to help us face our trials. We must look out for these comforts which we need to keep before our eyes, and we must reflect on how much they tell us about God’s care and his sovereign control of all events.
Ryle remarks that we observe in this passage the benefit of fellowship and communion between believers. Elisabeth has had blessings from God in her life, and Mary has had even greater blessing, and now they come together to rejoice over these blessings, and the faith of one strengthens the faith of the other with wonderful effect. Because of this meeting both Elisbeth and Mary are inspired to give prophecy of a wonderfully encouraging nature which has been preserved in Scripture for all time. Fellowship, he comments, is an eminent means and grace, and God reserves for his people some blessings which only come to them through each other. He does this to draw them closer together.
