God settles his arm around them that fear him. Of course, he doesn’t have an arm, but so real is what he has done, it is as if he does have arms. Using the analogy of a strong father who protects and supports his little child, Mary describes the security that God’s people experience. We trust in God’s arm as an arm which can do anything that accords with his will. That means that we bring to him every problem, no matter how hard, and we set the strength of his arm against that problem. So we always pray, and we never feint under any burden. We are under his protection even while we walk through the valley of death surrounded by hostile forces. Mary is praying not just for herself and her personal situation, but as a prophetess she is teaching all God’s people how to pray. ‘He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.’ She has in mind the deliverances of Israel by God, such as the deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt. When they called, in spite of the might of Egypt, God delivered. He sent an old man into the court of Pharaoh: Moses. How could it work when Moses was facing the tyrannical power of the Pharoah? By God’s hand it did. It was the same time after time. In another period of crisis Haman seemed ready to destroy the Jews, and providence places a young woman in a place of influence and the whole wicked scheme is overthrown. Many times God has delivered his people dramatically, deliberately.
