There is much joy associated with a child coming into the world, and especially a child given by God as this one certainly was. God is at the centre of their rejoicing, and what he has done fills them with happiness. Rejoicing at good things is so rare in this fallen world, both because so many evil things take place, and because human being are so reluctant to rejoice at the blessings of others. It is wonderful to see the goodness of neighbours genuinely rejoicing at God’s blessings without jealousy or resentment. It is an opportunity for us to love our neighbours as ourselves in a fervent way. Do we desire God’s blessings on our neighbours? We lose nothing by rejoicing at the goodness of God to others, and we should not hold back our joy. It is a form of praise to God to rejoice in his goodness to others, for we join them in giving thanks to God as if we had received those good things ourselves. Away with all mean-spirited attitudes which cannot bear to see another blessed more than us.
