Both Zacharias and Elisabeth were pious Jews. As such they were waiting for the promised Messiah, and conforming their lives to his standards in preparation for his coming.
We too must strive to obey God in every area of life, to submit every part of our lives to the Lordship of Christ. We are never content with the progress we have made so far, and we never look to our own righteousness as a sufficient ground for acceptance with God, but we do not cease to try to please him. We come daily confessing our sins and asking for new strength to put them to death and to be conformed to the image of the only perfect man, the Lord Jesus Christ.
