The prophecies concerning the coming Messiah were easily falsified if they were not true. They were too precise to be faked. The Messiah was to be a descendant of the royal house of David, and that is what he was: both Matthew’s and Luke’s genealogies of Christ show it to be so. The promise made to David was unambiguous (2 Samuel 7:12-13; 1 Chronicles 17:11-12; Isaiah 9:7). God would set upon his throne a descendant from his own loins who would rule forever. This could not apply to Solomon, or to any other mere mortal descendant. It could only apply to one who had power over death and could continue his reign into eternity. This is not about a line of kings that would follow one after another as each successively died; it is about a single individual who would personally continue his reign forever. Christ has been raised up as a horn of salvation, a power that is able to break through all obstacles, and to bring salvation to those whose case appears hopeless.
Application
Let none despair or think that their case is too hard, too far gone, too hopeless to bring it to the one who is a horn of salvation. While we can come to him we must press forward and not despair. He has a power which is greater than all our sins. He is willing to receive us no matter what we have done, if we set aside all self-justification and come to him as people with needs that only he can deal with. That is what he wants us to do, to be honest about our weakness and to cast ourselves on him entirely.
