But Zacharias cannot speak of his son for long without returning to the one who is at the centre of God’s purposes, and to whom his son, John, will point. All the blessings of salvation and of the knowledge of salvation come to us in Christ, and he is given ‘through the tender mercy of our God.
Now we have salvation. The shadow of death is still there, but Christ has given us all that is necessary to overcome it. It is good for us to be under the shadow of death still, for it is a reminder of reality which stops us slipping back into thinking this is a wonderful world where we would like to remain forever. The knowledge of salvation is the knowledge of how to be saved from disaster from eternal loss and misery, the knowledge of how to have the soul saved and the life transformed by the power of God, how to gain remission of sins. These are the great issues of the Bible, not about some secular benefits or blessing, not merely about happiness in this world.
