Matthew 10 records similar instructions given to the twelve when they are sent out, although that is a different occasion. What followers is about the representatives of Christ.
We too are appointed by the Lord to be his representatives. We are going to give an account one day. I was not only saved, but I was appointed to be a representative of the Lord. Have I carried out that commission? Have I done the work? I have to give account to him at the end of life's journey.
The fact that we are appointed is a great encouragement to us also. We didn't think of doing things these things ourselves; we didn't dream up the idea that we should be Christ's representatives. We are not running before we are sent, and doing things which we are not appointed to do. We have been appointed, and if we have been appointed, and we are working under his commission and his authority, it follows that he will use us and he will bless us. So this whole notion of appointment and commission is encouraging.
