When the lawyer and others heard this parable, they probably would never have guessed at first that the Lord Jesus Christ was also telling a parable about himself, that he was describing himself and teaching that the Jewish church, its priests, its scribes, and its Levites, would never help the wounded soul the wounded person. But Christ who was despised by them like any Samaritan, he would come and he would show mercy and he would help. The lawyer would never have understood it at first, but within a matter of months the Lord Jesus Christ was going to be arrested, and crucified. He was going to hang and die upon a cross, and after that he would be resurrected from the dead and ascend into heaven and his disciples would begin to preach that he was the Messiah. He was the one who had come from heaven to do all this deliberately and intentionally. He allowed himself to be taken and slain in order that he could show mercy to lost souls. He would die for them and he would take their punishment so they could be forgiven. Only then would that lawyer and many others who heard this parable really understand it. They would see that he was speaking about himself he was this Good Samaritan. It pictured him and they would realise its full meaning as time went by. His enemies had called him a Samaritan (John 8:48), and now he takes the name to himself. This parable is a time bomb. It's truth with a fuse attached. As the time went by, it became obvious Christ was talking about himself.
