Mary we know too, and it was she that later anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair. This was an exceptional act of devotion which the Lord says she did in expectation of the day of his burial. Mary loved Jesus, and again, this behaviour seems to indicate that she already knew the Lord, although, if that is the case, we are not told about Christ’s first encounter with the family.Mary loved the word. Probably it was uncharacteristic behaviour for her to leave of the work she was doing and go and listen to the Lord Jesus, but this was a unique opportunity which she could not miss. She so hungered for the truth that came from his mouth, that she could not miss any of it. Christ taught everywhere he went. It was his mission, and he felt so deeply for his sheep, knowing that this was what they needed more than anything else. He welcomed all who wanted to learn from him, and he, who could read every heart, knew the joy and the benefit that came to his hearers who gave him their closest attention. Mary sat in humble expectation at his feet in her own house in the humble posture of a disciple at the Master’s feet, giving him the utmost respect.
Application
Love for the word of God is what defines the true disciple. The measure of our spiritual health is that we put hearing the word and profiting from it above every other possible good. Let us come with strong expectation of blessing, and hold God’s word in the highest esteem. Those who have tasted that the Lord is good, want to come back and to receive more of his truth. Here was Mary’s opportunity to listen to the Son of God in her own home. There can never fail to be great depth to the words that come out of his mouth. Christ will have men and women to come and sit at his feet and learn from him.
