This is about humility and dependence. This is one of the matters in which the marching orders were changed a little, because they were later adjusted by the Lord. But the lesson which applies to us is this: we must follow a reasonable lifestyle. We are not to be worldly and indulgent; we are to travel light. We are not to be people who make deep roots in this world in this life. We must not be those who have so many irons in the fire that we have no time to witness, no emotional concern left for the glory of God and for representing him, because we have got this to worry about and this to worry about, and that to worry about. A lot of these things are unnecessary concerns. Certainly we have got to be concerned for our livelihood and for our families and our personal affairs, but some Christian believers saddle themselves with so many interests and responsibilities that they have no emotional energy or time left for the Lord. We are to travel light, and we are to present a reasonable front to the world. We are not people who depend on material things, but we have a hold on the things of God and we want to represent him. You think even of pastors these days, particularly in some Charismatic circles, who are so rich and so self-indulgent. They should be disqualified in our eyes at once, because they are running completely contrary to what the Lord requires of his people.
