That confidence in God which is essential to true faith is something with which most are familiar when it comes to earthly fathers. God has put an instinct in the heart of a father which makes them tender towards their own children, in spite of the sin that may dominate their behaviour to those outside the family. It is, of course, not something for which they can take credit, as if it could help secure the favour of God. We see the instinct that God gives to savage beasts that makes the lioness care for her young with the same mouth that tears apart the living flesh of her prey. But this fatherly concern is much higher that an animal instinct, for it is intelligent, loving, compassionate. The best of what still remains of the image of God in fallen man, is seen in the way parents treat their children.
